FOUET BY HERMES

The “Fouet” is a flexible platinum whip shimmering with 3,669 diamonds hangs provocatively around the neck. The tip flicks a shower of diamond light into the decolleté.

A press kit quote:
“Take (the) platinum Fouet necklace, entirely set with diamonds which gives up the arms of brute force in a sparkling band that curls caressingly on the skin. This whip does not command but amorously cajoles. Volte and volte-face: the tables are turned, the whip is tamed and force transformed into beauty. Pleasure is the watchword, leavened by a lashing of wry humour.”

ETHEL GRANGER

Ethel Granger, the woman with the smallest waist in the history of mankind, was a product of fashion and sexual fetish. Her husband, astronomer William Arnold Granger, believed that fashion influenced the structure of our most intimate thoughts: women that he found “flat chested results” of 1920s fashion were the byproduct of a perversion far more grave, according to him, than his obsession with small-waists.

SPECIAL TREATMENT

Isabelle Huppert is at it again. In “Special Treatment,” this mesmerizing French star with a history of playing sexually transgressive women (a sadomasochistic musician in “The Piano Teacher,” an incestuous mother in “Ma Mère”) portrays Alice Bergerac, a naughty prostitute whose clients engage her in elaborate role-playing fantasies.

For paedophiliac john, Alice dresses up as a little girl, clutches a teddy bear and sucks on a lollipop. For another client, she dons a blindfold and crams a ball gag into her mouth while awaiting his arrival. One of them is Xavier, the bumbling Lacanian psychoanalyst destined to change her life.

FRENCH MAID

Peter Jakubik’s highboy, night stand, stool, wall lamp and wall hanger narrate lusty the adventures hidden between the walls of motel rooms. The highboy and nightstand, named Maid, flirt with the fetish touch of the French maid uniform. The stool reflects sensual feminine touch by wearing white curly plastic knickers inspired by burlesque lingerie.

The wall lamp, the Coquette, is an ordinary wall lamp by day, but when night comes and you light her up, she starts flirting with the walls in your room.

Lastly, the wall hanger’s sexy legs extend from out of a skirt, ready to hold your coat.

THE HISTORY OF

THE BERKLEY HORSE

The Berkley Horse is a BDSM apparatus, supposedly designed for, or by, Theresa Berkley in 1828. She referred to it as a "chevalet".

A notorious machine was invented for Mrs Berkley to flog gentlemen upon, in the spring of 1828. It is capable of being opened to a considerable extent, so as to bring the body to any angle that might be desirable. There is a print in Mrs Berkley's memoirs, representing a man upon it quite naked. A woman is sitting in a chair exactly under it, with her bosom, belly, and bush exposed: she is manualizing his embolon, whilst Mrs Berkley is birching his posteriors.

"When the new flogging machine was invented, the designer told her it would bring her into notice, and go by her name after her death; and it did cause her to be talked of, and brought her a great deal of business. [...] The original horse is among the models of the Society of Arts at the Adelphi, and was presented by Doctor Vance, her executor."

In one surviving letter, a customer hearing about the Berkley Horse proffered Theresa Berkley this pricing for her services: ""a pound sterling for the first blood drawn, two pounds sterling if the blood runs down to my heels, three pounds sterling if my heels are bathed in blood, four pounds sterling if the blood reaches the floor, and five pounds sterling if you succeed in making me lose consciousness."

The Society of Arts at the Adelphi is now the Royal Society of Arts: they took possession of the Horse in 1837, with public exhibition promoted by radical publisher George Cannon. An illustration of the apparatus is reproduced in the original 1880s edition of Ashbee's Index Librorum Prohibitorum, but omitted from the 1969 reprint. It is unclear whether the original device was preserved by the Royal Society of Arts.

MIKE RUIZ

Mike Ruiz is a world renowned photographer, who also happens to be a TV personality, former model, actor and director. Mike's lens has done a whole lot of zooming in and zooming out, while the world keeps a keen focus on his high-impact, surreal brand of celebrity and fashion photography.

Mike was born and raised in Repentigny, a suburb in Montreal, Canada. After working for more than a decade as a successful model, his true calling came into focus one Christmas morning, when he got a gift of a lifetime: his first camera. Wide-eyed, he took the camera out of the box, and in the blink of an adept eye, his whole life was about to change. With focused determination, Mike immediately took to his new present--taught himself the intricate mechanics of the camera and to this day, he hasn't stopped clicking away. Perhaps it's only when you might hear him say, "we got it!", that there is but the slightest of pauses to an otherwise very hectic shooting schedule. Sharing with the world the images that he captures is tantamount to poetry. Whether it's Kim Kardashian to Betty White, or from Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry, Mike has seen and shot it all.

Like everything Mike touches, we witness a man who brings to life the fantastical, which in turn, is inspired by his brilliant optimism. Throughout it all, Mike's hard work, dedication and passion behind the camera has given him the opportunity to bring his message of hope to the forefront of all his efforts. Mike has a true sense of social responsibility and is always intent on giving back to the community. Among the countless organizations he supports, are The Ali Forney Center, GMHC, The Trevor Project, Housing Works, It Gets Better Campaign, Living Out Loud, Project Angel Food--as well as The Men’s Sexual Health Project for NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital. Mike is also a recurring motivational speaker at New York University, the Art Center College of Design, Brooklyn International High School and the College of Design in Sacramento.

In addition to his advertising and celebrity clients, Mike Ruiz has branched out as a director. He has produced music videos for artists, such as Vanessa Williams, Kelly Rowland, Jody Watley, Kristine W., Shontelle among others. Mike has also appeared on several reality shows. Such shows include Kathy Griffin's: My Life on the D-List; America's Next top Model and RuPaul's Drag Race, where he appears as a celebrity photographer and guest judge. He also rounded out the panel of expert judges on the third season of Canada's Next Top Model. Most recently, Mike is on the hit reality series, The A-List: New York, giving viewers a peek at his picture perfect LIFE...what's next on Mike's list? That is anybody's guess--but you can be sure there will be plenty more to come!

LOUIS VUITTON

Louis Vuitton's autumn/winter 2011 press release opened with a dictionary definition of the word Fetish. It was explained in the notes as something not merely attached to sex but to the act of worship and devotion in general. Designer Marc Jacob's revealed that his intention was to explore themes of commitment, effort and discipline.

His reference was The Night Porter (Italian: Il Portiere di notte) a controversial 1974 film by Italian director Liliana Cavani, starring Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling. Bogarde plays Maximilian Theo Aldorfer, a former Nazi SS officer, and Rampling is Lucia Atherton, a concentration camp survivor who had an ambiguous relationship with Aldorfer. Flashbacks show Max tormenting Lucia, but also acting as her protector. In an iconic scene, Lucia sings a Marlene Dietrich song to the concentration camp guards while wearing pieces of an SS uniform, and Max "rewards" her with the severed head of a male inmate who had been bullying the other inmates, a reference to Salome. Thirteen years after World War II, Lucia meets Aldorfer again; he is now the night porter at a Vienna hotel. There, they fall back into their sadomasochistic relationship.

The look was central to the collection; Jacobs dressed each of his girls in peaked caps, some of them LV monogrammed. The wardrobes of both female and male of The Night Porter were explored in the form of voluminous trenchcoats, leather gloves, braces and military-style jodphurs and jackets.

Models as uniformed bellboys and chauffeurs to sexy French maids in pure fashion fantasy form, as Paris’ iconic Louvre played host to legendary models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, role-playing their parts on the catwalk. Dipped in lace, leather & fur and accessorized by crystal covered handcuffs.

The ‘Feti-Chic’ collection had plenty of products that many would look upon with fetishistic desire. Jacob's designs certainly brings up ideas of traditional S&M. They risk being cheap and trashy but Jacobs was staying true to the discipline aspect of 'fetish'. He promoted the 'less is more' philosophy (a back-buttoning blouse is far sexier than a bare top-half). And obviously, his fabrics were far more luxurious than the sort one usually associates with sex shops.

COMICS

ERIC STANTON

Eric Stanton (September 30, 1926–March 17, 1999; born Ernest Stanzoni) was an American bondage and fetish illustrator, cartoonist, and comic-book artist.

The majority of his work depicted female dominance scenarios.

Born and raised in New York City, Stanton began his career in 1947 at Irving Klaw's Movie Star News company, gaining employment by boasting he could draw better than any of the artists then working for Klaw. He afterward attended the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, under Batman inker Jerry Robinson and others. One classmate was future Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, with whom Stanton shared a Manhattan studio at 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue from 1958 to 1966 or 1968 (accounts differ). Some of Stanton's work during this period shows Ditko influence (see below), and the introduction to one book of Stanton's work says, "Eric Stanton drew his pictures in India ink, and they were then hand-coloured by Ditko". Ditko reportedly denied touching Stanton's work, though Stanton himself said they would spot-ink each other's art.

Stanton, in a 1988 interview with comics historian Greg Theakston, recalled that though his contribution to Spider-Man was "almost nil", he and Ditko had "worked on storyboards together [and] I added a few ideas. But the whole thing was created by Steve on his own. ... I think I added the business about the webs coming out of his hands".

After Klaw died in 1966, Stanton supported himself by self-publishing and distributing his work to a quasi-underground network of subscribers and patrons. His mimeographed/photocopied Stantoons comic-book series continued to his death in 1999 and featured many of his best-known post-Klaw concepts, including the superheroine Blunder Broad, and the Amazon-like Princkazons.

Stanton created Blunder Broad in the 1970s with writer Turk Winter, for use in a great number of pornographic BDSM stories, published over the years in black and white. A parody of Wonder Woman, Blunder Broad is an inept superheroine who continually fails in her missions and is invariably raped and tortured by her enemies, who include a lesbian supervillainess variably called Leopard Lady, Pussycat Galore, or Cheetah, and her male sidekick Count Dastardly. Blunder Broad can be deprived of her super strength when subjected to cunnilingus.

With "Lady Princker", Stanton and Shaltis (as well as Alan Throne and Winter) created the Princkazons storyline in which women around the world grew female penises, or "princks". These women also grew taller and stronger than men and began dominating and humiliating the men in public, including facesitting and rape.

In addition to books about his work, Stanton's art was reprinted in the 1990s in Fantagraphics Books' Eros Comix comic book Tops and Bottoms, issues subtitled "Bound Beauty" (#1), "Lady in Charge" (#2), "Broken Engagement" (#3), "Broken Engagement 2" (#4), Sweet Gwen, The Kinky Hook, as well as in that publisher's Bizarre Comix #3 and Confidential TV. The German publisher Taschen has published several collections.

WHIP MACHINE

It does not take long before the initial amusement that overtakes a visitor to an exhibition of quirky kinetic sculptures by Rebecca Horn disappears, and a sense of considerable unease takes over.

She is a 44-year-old West German artist, still better known by Europeans than Americans, although her work has been exhibited in the United States on and off for well over a decade. Having started her career in the 1960's constructing body sculptures that occasionally mixed sadism with sensuality, she has in recent years concocted electronic gadgetry of the sort displayed here.

My machines are not washing machines or cars. They have a human quality and they must change. They get nervous and must stop sometimes. If a machine stops, it doesn’t mean it’s broken. It’s just tired. The tragic or melancholic aspect of machines is very important to me. I don’t want them to run forever. It’s part of their life that they must stop and faint.

EXPO

THOMAS RUFF

Thomas Ruff (born 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach) is an internationally renowned German photographer who lives and works in Düsseldorf.

During his studies, Ruff developed his method of conceptual serial photography. His initial focus was the interiors of German living quarters, with typical features of the 1950s to 1970s. This was followed by similar views of buildings and portraits of friends and acquaintances. These are typically shown with emotionless expressions, in very large, high-resolution passport-style portraits. In a discussion with Philip Pocock (Journal for Contemporary Art, 1993), Ruff mentions a connection between these portraits and the police observation methods in Germany in the 1970s during the German Autumn.

Thomas Ruff's building portraits are likewise serial, and have been edited digitally to remove obstructing details – a typifying method, which gives the images an exemplary character. Of these Ruff notes, "This type of building represents more or less the ideology and economy in the West German republic in the past thirty years."

These series were followed in 1989 by images of the night sky, Sterne, which were not based on photographs by Ruff, but rather on archived images found by the artist in a European Observatory. In the years from 1992 to 1995, Ruff produced night images of exteriors and buildings using the same night vision infrared technology developed for use, both military and in broadcast television, during the Gulf War. In 1994 to 1996 these were followed by Stereoscopy images, and another series in the 1990s, Zeitungsfotos, consisted of newspaper clippings enlarged without their original subtitles.

In 2003 Thomas Ruff published a photographic collection of "Nudes" with a text by the French author Michel Houellebecq. Ruff's images here are based on Internet pornography, which was digitally processed and obscured. In 2009, The Aperture Foundation in New York published jpegs, a large-scale book dedicated exclusively to his monumental series of pixilated enlargements of internet-culled images, all compressed using the standard JPEG format.[1][2] which intentionally uses JPEG artifacts.

UNA BURKE

Designer/Artists Statement:

Through my work I continually aim to create leather objects which are both visually captivating and technically challenging. They are pieces of wearable art which are indefinable as particular garments, preventing them from being placed into the conventional categories of the fashion industry. They are free to exist just as the objects that they are, interpreted independently by each individual. I use traditional leatherworking techniques to produce these evocative, conceptual creations. In doing this I hope to encourage a new and more modern appreciation for leather craftsmanship and present the possibilities achievable through the use of this material in both the areas of art and of functional design.

SAMUEL CIRNANSCK

HELLO KITTY

The Hello Kitty-Inspired Sofa by Mark Stratis is not as cute as it may sound. With a handcuff on either side of this stylish seat, this sofa appears to be perfect for the bondage-loving Hello Kitty fan.The couch was a part of a Hello Kitty-inspired ‘Love Hotel Art’ installation, explaining the naughty handcuffs. With lots of pink and a sparkly bow on the back cushion, I’m sure that this Hello Kitty-Inspired Sofa will fulfill a certain population’s fetishes.

The starting point of the Love Hotel project began with a simple question. How could America solve its current financial recession? Mark Stratis came up with a possible solution. The sex industry accumulates over fifty-seven-billion dollars a year worldwide. Twelve billion of which comes from the U.S. alone. What if American tapped into the sex industry to help pull itself out of the recession?

Let’s just say that’s what happened. America decided that it needed to be number one again and quickly. They start by legalizing prostitution, which had only been made illegal in the early 1900’s. Slowly but surely, small red-light districts start appearing around the nation. The red-light districts have brothels, bathhouses, sex stores, theatres, and Love hotels.

This is the idea that Mark Stratis used to create his Hello Kitty inspired Love hotel pre-viz model, which was used as the basis for the furniture collection. The collection is comprised of a Sofa, two ottomans, coffee table, lamp, and rug. To compliment the furniture and take viewers into this love hotel world, Mark also created several smaller props. The props include, a ball gag, Hello Kitty Paddle, necklace, two mock magazine covers, and Kitty Milk carton.

BOOKS

DE SADE – LETTERS FROM PRISON

The great libertine author, the subject of many biographical efforts, is finally allowed to speak about his life, in his own words, with the publication of this selection of letters written during the many years that Sade was incarcerated. Behind bars from 1777, when he was first imprisoned in Vincennes, to 1789, the marquis had nothing else to do but write. These letters reveal that while he was melodramatic, manipulative, self-righteous and prone to fits of rage and paranoia, he was also extremely insightful, intelligent, well read, full of ironic humour and capable of expressing great love and tenderness to his wife.

Most of the letters in this collection are to his spouse, toward whom his emotions are startlingly extreme. In an early letter he writes, "My dear friend, you are all I have left on earth: father, mother, sister, wife, friend, you are all those to me, I have no one but you: do not abandon me, I beg you, let it not be from you that I receive the final blow of misfortune." But later, he vents his frustration on her, chiding her cruelly for foolish pursuits: "If 'tis true that one must account to the Lord for one's time on earth, what embarrassment awaits you in the next world!" The only drawback to this collection is that the reader gets only Sade's side. Although Seaver's elegant introduction nearly fills the need, the full context, in the form of the many letters Sade received, is missing. Even by themselves, however, these stunning epistles show a man who suffered endlessly in prison, but who never lost his spirit, finding solace in the written word.

ART

UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON

The latest Benetton project: Lana Sutra was created by Erik Ravelo, a Cuban artist at Fabrica. These art pieces embody the idea of colour and of a woollen thread linking all humankind. The Lana Sutra is a series of 15 installations conceived as a homage to love and dedicated to the desire for an equal and sharing society.

The Lana Sutra is the result of Ravelo’s reflections on the meaning of Kama sutra (kama, pleasure; sutra, a thread which unites). Each installation is made of two plaster sculptures: two bodies embracing and covered in woollen threads in various colours, chosen from the key tonalities present in the United Colours of Benetton Fall-Winter collection, currently available in the stores. The points where the two entities meet and where the colours merge into each other, is yet again a way to symbolize how love can cancel differences and bind humanity as one.

STORYTELLERS

Storytellers provides a rare opportunity for gallery visitors to view a wide range of material pulled from The Kinsey Institute’s extensive library collection, with an intriguing selection of pulp fiction paperbacks from the 1960s, illustrated erotic novels, underground comic books, Japanese pillow books, and other narrative texts. Story-driven artworks are also included in the exhibition, ranging from vintage photographs, prints, watercolours, and drawings by anonymous and known artists to a series of Judy Chicago lithographs and other contemporary pieces.

A case of ’60s pulp fiction sits in the middle of the room. Titles such as “Sucked into Sin” and “Sexperiment” are accompanied by depictions of sexual encounters.
Kinsey Institute art curator Johnson-Roehr said these books were popular, cheap and much like the Internet today in their accessibility. With many different topics available, the novels fed every fetish.

“Storytellers” gives visitors a chance to view sex as an ongoing narrative.

PHOTOGRAPHY

POLLY BORLAND

In the recent photography series “Smudge,” Polly Borland, an Australian photographer, shows a series of anonymous models with hidden faces. Some of her subjects’ faces are covered with stuffed toy heads, while other looks teeter towards fetish fashion. With stocking-covered faces and simplistically drawn-on features, her work runs the gamut from cute to bizarre.

The series was inspired while photographing a man dressed in a Santa Claus outfit. Borland decided to take his beard and have it cover his entire face. That shot went to exploring with wigs and other small props. Fans of Borland’s work know that the fetish theme isn’t a new one for the artists; ironically, the photographer has also shot such famous icons as England’s Queen to pop sensation Kylie Minogue. From those well-done but staid subjects, she did a series with men who enjoy dressing up as babies after work.

BOOKS

LA MAITRESSE DU PIRATE

“De tuin met tien deuren” is a fairy tale about a young woman who is forced by her lover to undergo a number of fetishist initiations. He leaves her behind in the woods peopled by mythological creatures who take care of her and transform her into an ‘insider’. The initiation ritual is based on the great arcana from the Tarot de Marseille, in which each card represents a ritual she has to undergo. At the end of the journey, she has to abide by the judgement…

Eroticism, BDSM and fetishism are key words in this story about the limits to our freedom, about the way we try to cross these limits or how, to the contrary, we determine our own limits. Reality, fiction and symbols crisscross, touch and merge, transporting the reader to the twilight zone where fantasy and reality meet. This is the story of a journey to explore extremes, set in a world of fairy tales.
